WHO highlights critical staffing and funding gaps hindering Ebola containment in Congo

GENEVA / RankWire.AI / – Insufficient personnel and financial resources are impeding urgent efforts to contain the expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s territory. The outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo virus species, has affected six provinces with over 6,000 confirmed cases and 3,175 deaths. The World Health Organization is urging international donors to provide immediate financial aid to support frontline medical teams and increase isolation capacities in remote eastern regions.

To counteract the geographic spread, health authorities adopted a decentralized treatment approach aimed at establishing care facilities nearer to rural communities impacted by the outbreak. Response teams have set up nearly 1,400 treatment beds across 59 operational centers with specialized functions. Nevertheless, technical assessments indicate that an additional 1,600 beds are needed to reach the target capacity of 3,000 beds. Achieving this goal involves recruiting and training around 5,000 more healthcare professionals to support the existing 9,000 health workers required for full operational readiness.

The effort to expand operational capacity faces further hurdles due to high costs and limited resources across isolated provinces. On average, daily expenses for personal protective equipment amount to $25 per healthcare worker entering high-risk patient isolation zones. Running a standard 50-bed treatment facility costs roughly $500,000, creating significant financial pressures amid decreasing global donor contributions. Data circulated by the Emirates News Agency underscores that fully operational treatment centers staffed with adequately trained personnel are essential to improving patient survival and stopping transmission chains.

WHO Reports Outbreak Growth Driven by Bundibugyo Strain

A primary challenge remains the shortage of non-governmental partners capable of managing complex isolation facilities. According to Luca Fontana, the WHO technical lead, only five or six global humanitarian organizations possess the expertise necessary to establish and operate specialized Ebola treatment centers. Without additional operational partners stepping in to manage existing facilities, key technical teams remain tied to current sites, limiting their ability to deploy resources to newly emerging hotspots.

In response to these partner limitations, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has taken direct control over several treatment centers established during the initial outbreak phase. However, health officials warn that if transmission continues across eastern border regions, the country’s capacity may become overstretched. Staff shortages and funding issues hinder Ebola response efforts as international agencies call for immediate partner deployment to ease the burden on state workers.

Rising Costs of Personal Protective Equipment Challenge Daily Operations

In support of the response scale-up, the Congolese government along with international health organizations unveiled a revised six-month operational plan valued at $1.3 billion. This strategy emphasizes expanding epidemiological surveillance, acquiring vital medical supplies, boosting community engagement, and ensuring the availability of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. Since there is no licensed vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, supportive clinical care at equipped treatment centers remains the main approach to lowering mortality rates.

Global health organizations continue to appeal to governments and philanthropic groups worldwide to release pledged funding without delay. Updates on case numbers, facility deployment, and resource distribution will be shared through official public health portals as teams work to expand clinical infrastructure across eastern provinces.
