NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Health officials in New York City identified Legionella DNA within a Yankee Stadium cooling tower amid an investigation into an outbreak in South Bronx. By Tuesday night, the city had confirmed 11 cases of Legionnaires’ disease. One individual has succumbed, and three patients remain hospitalized. The New York City Health Department announced preliminary positive PCR results from 10 out of 24 cooling towers sampled in ZIP codes 10451 and 10456.

NYC finds Legionella DNA in Yankee Stadium cooling tower
Yankee Stadium is included in New York City’s South Bronx cooling tower investigation.

This region encompasses sections of the Melrose and Morrisania neighborhoods. Officials sampled cooling towers as part of their efforts to trace environmental sources of the infections. PCR testing can detect Legionella genetic material, but it does not confirm whether the bacteria are still alive. To determine if viable bacteria are present, culture testing is necessary, a process that officials said can take up to two weeks.

The Yankees stated that the ongoing outbreak has not been linked to Yankee Stadium. The team noted that its cooling towers, installed in 2024, are regularly checked for water quality. A Legionella test conducted on August 20 returned a negative result. Additionally, the team performed weekly water quality and bacteriological indicator tests on August 26, September 2, and September 9 before city investigators sampled the stadium on September 11.

Stadium tower undergoes cleaning as testing expands across the city

All 10 cooling towers with initial positive PCR findings have been ordered to undergo comprehensive cleaning and disinfection by city health officials. The New York City Health Department mandated that these procedures be completed by September 14. Later, Health Commissioner Alister Martin confirmed that remediation had been carried out on each tower with concerning results. The Yankees reported that the stadium’s cooling tower was drained, cleaned, and disinfected on September 13 following notification from city authorities about the preliminary finding.

Legionnaires’ disease manifests as a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. Infection typically occurs when individuals inhale tiny water droplets containing the bacteria. Usually, the disease does not spread from person to person. Symptoms can include fever, cough, and breathing difficulties. Officials advised anyone living, working, or visiting the South Bronx area since late August to see a healthcare provider if flu-like symptoms develop.

Investigators persist in identifying the outbreak’s origin

According to health officials, eight of the 10 cooling towers with preliminary positive results had met the city’s 31-day Legionella testing requirement. The remaining two sites had not submitted the necessary testing data when the findings were announced. Authorities continue to analyze laboratory results and case data from the South Bronx cluster. The ongoing investigation includes testing cooling towers at Yankee Stadium along with other properties within the affected neighborhoods as officials strive to pinpoint the source linked to the confirmed cases.

The Health Department assured residents of ZIP codes 10451 and 10456 that they can safely continue using tap water, showers, and air conditioning systems. Furthermore, officials stated that entering buildings associated with the 10 cooling towers does not pose an additional risk. The Yankees confirmed that authorities have not requested postponement of games at Yankee Stadium. City officials continue to monitor case developments as laboratory culture testing proceeds on samples collected during the South Bronx investigation.
