GUATEMALA / RankWire.AI / – Guatemala elevated the warning to its maximum tier in three departments as Fuego volcano emitted ash, flowing lava, and perilous pyroclastic currents. Authorities designated Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, and Escuintla under a red alert status. During this crisis, an orange alert remained active nationwide. Officials reported that ashfall impacted approximately 29,000 residents across 18 communities, with emergency teams continuing evacuations near vulnerable ravines and settlements.

Fuego volcano eruption puts Guatemala regions on red alert
Evacuations continue near Fuego volcano as ashfall reaches several departments.

The eruption intensified on Monday, with columns of gas and ash ascending above the crater. Pyroclastic flows descended along five ravines on the volcano’s western and southwestern slopes. Some of these flows traveled between five and seven kilometers from the crater. These rapid-moving currents contain scorching hot gases, volcanic rocks, and ash. Monitoring teams also tracked an ash cloud that extended west and northwest over multiple regions of Guatemala.

Initial evacuations targeted El Porvenir and Las Lajitas in the municipality of San Juan Alotenango. Around 250 residents from nearly 50 families were moved during this early operation. As conditions worsened, shelter capacity expanded, with more people leaving communities exposed to ash and volcanic dangers. Five designated shelters accommodated approximately 1,699 individuals, while officials prepared three additional locations. Evacuated families received meals, medical attention, security, and basic supplies at these sites.

Relief efforts intensify in regions near Fuego

Guatemala’s disaster management agency, CONRED, oversaw local evacuations and relief efforts in the affected departments. Authorities advised residents to steer clear of ravines and adhere to instructions issued by emergency personnel. They also recommended safeguarding stored food and water from falling ash. Populations in vulnerable areas received guidance to cover their faces with masks or damp cloths. Response teams remained in the vicinity to monitor the evolving situation and provide support to local authorities.

INSIVUMEH, the national institute for volcano and weather monitoring, tracked activity through field observers, sensors, cameras, and satellite images. Data recorded pyroclastic flows in the Seca, Taniluyá, Ceniza, Las Lajas, and Honda ravines. Elevated seismic activity persisted due to ongoing emissions of gas, lava, and ash during the eruptive phase. Ash dispersal reached Sololá, Quetzaltenango, Suchitepéquez, Retalhuleu, and San Marcos, extending beyond the three departments under the red alert.

    Transportation disruptions accompany volcanic crisis

Authorities restricted access to National Route 14, a major roadway near Fuego volcano. The Ministry of Education suspended classes in nearby communities as ash fallout and emergency operations disrupted normal activities. Road maintenance crews monitored access points and changing travel conditions around the volcano. La Aurora International Airport continued functioning under volcanic ash procedures. Security personnel patrolled evacuated neighborhoods to safeguard property and assist residents who had left their homes.

Rainfall posed an additional hazard as water mixed with loose ash, rocks, and volcanic debris, potentially forming lahars that could travel rapidly through river channels and steep ravines. During the latest assessment, authorities reported no structural damage in the affected communities. Mudflows had not yet impacted inhabited villages. Fuego, situated approximately 30 kilometers south of Guatemala City, remains among Central America’s most active volcanoes.
