Ebola Cases in Congo Surpass 5,000 as Efforts to Control the Outbreak Intensify

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The World Health Organization reports that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo might be contained within three months if adequate resources are allocated to the response. Official data up to Aug. 16 indicate 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 fatalities. The virus has affected six provinces and 55 health zones, with a case fatality rate of approximately 47%. This has made it the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded within the country.

According to WHO incident manager Thierno Baldé, the timeline for containment hinges on maintaining sufficient staffing, supplies, and operational support. The ongoing response has secured roughly $69.3 million out of the needed $115 million. During a two-week span, health teams added over 400 treatment beds, deployed 100 additional epidemiologists, and mobilized more than 500 community health workers. These personnel are vital for surveillance, contact tracing, case detection, and referral efforts. Additionally, the response requires ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel across the regions affected by the outbreak.

Transmission has now reached Bas-Uélé, marking it as the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. While Ituri remained the primary transmission hub in mid-August, responsible for most confirmed cases and deaths, officials noted that many recently identified infections lacked any known connection to existing patients. This situation underscores the urgency of faster case identification and contact monitoring. To address this, teams have expanded surveillance activities to detect infections sooner and ensure patients are transferred promptly to treatment centers.

Response efforts grow across multiple provinces affected

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses responsible for Ebola disease. Since 1976, the country has experienced 17 Ebola outbreaks. Additionally, Uganda has reported cases linked to the broader outbreak, with 20 confirmed infections and two deaths. No new cases have been reported there since June 21.

Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or approved specific treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Consequently, medical responses focus on early diagnosis, supportive care, infection prevention, and rapid contact tracing. Efforts also include conducting safe burials and community outreach to curb further spread. Local health workers assist in identifying suspected cases and directing patients to appropriate treatment facilities. Authorities have provided hygiene supplies and trained personnel in affected communities. Early supportive care remains crucial for those showing Ebola symptoms.

Maintaining surveillance and funding are critical for outbreak control

During August, contact monitoring improved but still fell short of public health goals in some regions. By August 12, response teams tracked 17,460 of the 20,740 designated contacts, representing approximately 84%. Additional field epidemiologists have joined the efforts to enhance detection and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment. Community health workers continue to report suspected infections and connect patients with medical care. Nevertheless, healthcare workers have faced significant risks, with over 150 infections among medical personnel recorded by early August.

The outbreak was classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. Both national health authorities and international partners persist in laboratory testing, clinical management, surveillance, safe burials, and community engagement activities. The latest weekly data reveal hundreds of additional confirmed cases and deaths compared to previous reports. Baldé emphasized that the three-month containment assessment depends heavily on securing the necessary resources to sustain ongoing operations. Efforts also continue in regions affected by insecurity and disruptions to healthcare services.
