U.S. Suspends Iran Strike Plans Amid Progress in Diplomatic Negotiations

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump indicated that the United States would cancel a planned attack on Iran if negotiators swiftly reached an agreement. Trump emphasized that the deal should reopen the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran’s nuclear program. Additionally, he noted that Israel was supportive of the diplomatic efforts. As of Monday, the White House had not announced a signed agreement, and specific terms or a formal timeline remained undisclosed.

Trump halts planned Iran attack as deal talks advance
US and Iran talks focus on nuclear activity and access through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran disputed Trump’s assertion that Tehran had requested Washington to halt the imminent strike. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that negotiations with Oman over navigation routes were nearing their conclusion. Esmaeil Baghaei, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, explained that these discussions involved a new route through the waterway, but remained separate from any decision about fully reopening Hormuz. Iran also kept its military forces on alert.

This announcement came after a phone call between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Saudi Arabia conveyed that the crown prince highlighted the importance of dialogue and reducing regional tensions during their conversation. Trump had previously identified Jared Kushner, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as key participants in the negotiations. Washington did not release an official schedule for the talks. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia continued to endorse direct diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran.

Discussions focus on nuclear issues and maritime disputes

The United States and Israel initiated military strikes against Iran on February 28, targeting Iranian missile capabilities and nuclear sites. A temporary ceasefire halted hostilities through part of June, but the agreement eventually unraveled, leading to resumed military operations. Iran maintains its denial of seeking a nuclear weapon, asserting its right to civilian nuclear technology instead. At the same time, Iran rejects claims suggesting it aims to develop nuclear weapons.

The Strait of Hormuz plays a crucial role in ongoing negotiations because it serves as a vital conduit for global energy exports. Prior to the conflict, roughly 20% of worldwide oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through this waterway. Restrictions imposed by Iran have decreased tanker traffic and driven up transportation costs. Recent maritime incidents near Oman have raised security concerns, including an attack on a tanker’s engine room by a projectile, although no casualties were reported during the weekend events, according to officials.

Oil markets decline following diplomatic update

Oil prices experienced a significant drop on Monday after Trump announced that the planned U.S. military strike would not move forward under the current deal. Brent crude declined by $4.49, or 5.1%, and was trading at $83.44 per barrel early in the day. U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell by $4.90, or 5.8%, to $79.77. Both benchmarks had surged over 20% in July. Moreover, OPEC+ approved an increase of approximately 188,000 barrels per day for September.

As of early Monday, no definitive agreement had been reached on nuclear, maritime, or security issues. Trump linked the cancellation of the strike to the swift conclusion of an agreement. Iran continued negotiations with Oman while remaining prepared militarily. Israel stated it was in close security coordination with the United States. The primary focus of the talks remains navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear activities, and ending the five-month conflict.
