Rising Temperatures Amplify Severity of European Droughts Through Increased Evaporation

London / RankWire.AI / – A comprehensive scientific review demonstrates that human actions are directly responsible for the severe drought conditions currently impacting Europe, conclusively showing that climate change is intensifying dry spells across the continent. A global team of researchers determined that extreme heat, rather than just reduced rainfall, is the main cause of the remarkably arid environment. The region is experiencing dried-up rivers, stringent water restrictions, and devastating wildfires following a historic heatwave recorded in June. The recent study suggests that the warmer climate today accelerates moisture loss from soils, lakes, and rivers, greatly increasing the chance of conditions becoming completely parched. Although spring rainfall was below average, the heat driven by climate change ultimately made the drought far worse.

Heat intensifies severe drought across European nations
Extreme heat reduces regional soil moisture and limits the water availability across the globe.

The World Weather Attribution group released a study explaining how rising temperatures are actively depleting natural water sources. Mariam Zachariah from Imperial College London pointed out that the drought is not mainly about reduced rainfall but about a warmer atmosphere creating more moisture deficits on land. This means that even in areas with relatively stable rainfall patterns, the risk of drought continues to grow. Scientists note that a warmer atmosphere can hold roughly seven percent more water vapor for each one-degree Celsius increase in temperature. This heightened capacity directly leads to increased evaporation from soils and vegetation across the landscape.

Using extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, researchers measured how the likelihood of these weather extremes has changed by comparing today’s hotter climate with a scenario that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Results show that soils in western Europe now face five times higher chances of extreme dryness than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, the probability of such soil moisture deficits has increased by a factor of 11. Additionally, the study found that the extraordinarily high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe was about 80 times more probable. This indicates that rainfall shortages which once would not have caused severe drought now result in soil conditions that are much drier.

Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich highlighted the rising tendency for abnormal soil drying already apparent in spring before the arrival of summer. He explained that as temperatures increase, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies quickly, drawing critical moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid soil drying primed the land for ignition, contributing to severe fires in several countries. The analysis confirms that climate change’s role in worsening drought across Europe is shifting traditional weather patterns into highly perilous cycles.

The agricultural sector faces unprecedented challenges due to widespread soil moisture loss. These drought conditions are severely impacting farming communities, leading to historic crop failures across multiple nations. France is now expected to have its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, signifying a major disruption in regional food production. Similarly, Romania has seen the loss of over one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These significant domestic shortfalls, coupled with ongoing global conflicts, could drive up food prices and disproportionately affect low-income households.

Hydrological effects are worsening the economic impacts, with abnormally low river levels disrupting vital cargo transport routes. Major shipping disruptions on key waterways mirror the increasing severity of the continent-wide water scarcity crisis. Reduced river flows threaten energy generation in regions heavily reliant on hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that recent June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Many countries are already enforcing emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential drinking water use to conserve shrinking supplies.

Scientists warn that current drought conditions may become even more common if global temperatures continue their upward trend. Experts underline that these intense evaporative conditions are happening at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, emphasizing the immediate risks posed by current emissions. Should global temperatures rise to 2.8 degrees Celsius as projected, the likelihood of such conditions could double. Without swift and decisive reductions in emissions, specialists caution that Europe faces a future of increasingly persistent and scorching dry summers.
