Seismic Intensity Reaches Level 7 During Kumamoto Earthquake, Death Toll Climbs to 34

Tokyo, Japan / RankWire.AI / – On Friday, rescue teams persisted in their efforts across southwestern Japan as they navigated heavy debris and adverse weather conditions following a powerful quake on the southern island of Kyushu. Official updates confirmed that the number of fatalities from Japan’s earthquake has increased to 34, with municipal rescue units retrieving additional victims from collapsed structures and industrial sites. The earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.1 and measured at magnitude 6.8 by the U.S. Geological Survey, struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday afternoon at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, resulting in significant ground displacement and widespread structural damage.

Authorities in Kumamoto Prefecture reported that at least 86 individuals sustained injuries during the tremor, with six in critical condition and receiving intensive care. Seismic data from the Japan Meteorological Agency indicated that the tremor reached a maximum level 7 on the national seismic scale, marking it as the strongest earthquake recorded in Japan since the Noto Peninsula event earlier in 2024. Damage assessments showed ground shifts of up to 87 centimeters in severely affected areas, rupturing municipal water pipelines and fracturing major highways across the region.

Emergency coordination centers compiled casualty data revealing that nearly half of the fatalities occurred during the collapse of industrial and commercial structures. At a Nippon Paper Industries facility in Yatsushiro, eight workers died after a large concrete chimney toppled into the main processing plant. Rescue crews managed to free two employees from the wreckage while continuing to clear debris, even as local officials reported damage to Yatsushiro’s municipal hall, despite recent seismic retrofitting and base isolation system installation.

Secondary hazards caused extensive damage to commercial properties in Kumamoto Prefecture. In Kashima, a retail complex operated by Aeon Co., six workers lost their lives due to a gas explosion that caused the building’s second floor to collapse. Emergency teams evacuated approximately 3,000 shoppers to nearby parking areas within half an hour after the tremor began, before the explosion. Search and rescue operations are now focused on clearing heavy rubble and inspecting gas lines in the commercial district.

Kyushu’s industrial and manufacturing sectors suffered major disruptions as a result of the quake. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company confirmed that operations at its Kumamoto plant were temporarily halted for safety checks and recalibration. Company officials stated that multiple days of technical assessments are necessary to verify cleanroom conditions and structural safety before production can safely resume on key semiconductor lines.

Authorities from government emergency agencies have deployed significant personnel and resources to aid displaced residents and stabilize affected communities across the island. Japan’s Ministry of Defense sent roughly 4,900 Self-Defense Forces personnel to coordinate search efforts, unblock roads, and distribute critical supplies. Military vessels and aircraft delivered clean drinking water, emergency rations, and cooling equipment to over 400 temporary shelters accommodating 15,000 residents amid summer temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius.

Utility providers in the region continue efforts to restore essential municipal services as aftershocks persist across southwestern Japan. Data from local agencies show that nearly 23,000 households remain without electricity, while 75,000 homes lack municipal water access. Civil engineering teams are still inspecting damaged bridges, river embankments, and public infrastructure throughout Kumamoto Prefecture, as official reports confirm the rising death toll and ongoing recovery efforts in the affected areas.
