Oil Prices May Surge Amid Persistent Strait of Hormuz Blockade

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Global energy markets are experiencing renewed instability as ongoing maritime traffic disruptions in the Middle East limit export shipments through key regional shipping routes. A commodities research report issued by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. outlined scenarios where ongoing maritime bottlenecks could push Brent crude benchmarks higher during the fourth quarter. The main trigger is the transit restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor through which nearly twenty percent of the world’s traded petroleum normally passes. Prolonged delays in navigation across the Persian Gulf have decreased export flows, tightening short-term supply buffers and increasing spot market delivery premiums worldwide.

Crude prices face upside risks as Strait of Hormuz stays blocked
Oil market risks remain tilted upward following maritime delays

The report emphasizes that Goldman Sachs warns oil prices could reach 120 if Middle East conflicts continue into the year’s final months. Current estimates show that crude oil and refined petroleum product flows through this narrow waterway have dropped to below 45 percent of pre-conflict baseline levels. While alternative routes like overland pipelines across Saudi Arabia and secondary maritime pathways via the Red Sea exist, their combined capacity remains insufficient to fully compensate for the volume lost from blocked Persian Gulf ports. As a result, global commercial inventories have been drawn down more rapidly, making energy importers more susceptible to immediate supply shocks.

Despite these upside risks, the investment bank maintains that a price spike above 120 dollars per barrel is not its central forecast. Under the baseline scenario, which assumes a gradual easing of regional geopolitical tensions and a steady recovery of maritime transit, Goldman Sachs projects Brent crude averaging 80 dollars per barrel in the fourth quarter and 75 dollars in the following year. However, analysts led by Daan Struyven stressed that the risk balance remains heavily tilted to the upside. Ongoing military activity, potential naval blockades, and rising marine insurance premiums continue to sustain risk premiums across global oil futures markets.

Regional Transit Disruptions Endanger Global Energy Stability

Market volatility has increased after recent fluctuations in benchmark crude futures. Front-month Brent crude contracts exceeded $91 per barrel before easing slightly as physical refiners paid higher premiums for immediate cargo deliveries. The widening spread between prompt and forward contracts signals growing concern among industrial buyers about physical supply availability. Data from the International Monetary Fund shows that sustained increases in energy prices of this magnitude could accelerate global consumer inflation, worsen trade deficits for energy-dependent nations, and cause central banks to delay planned monetary easing measures across major economies.

Tracking vessel movements reveals that commercial tanker activity through Persian Gulf chokepoints remains restricted despite intermittent diplomatic efforts to establish transit corridors. Major international shipping registries have advised operators to exercise extreme caution or reroute vessels when possible. Reports from the International Energy Agency indicate that although public strategic reserves are still available for emergencies, private inventories in key consuming regions have fallen below five-year averages. This depletion of private stocks significantly reduces the market’s ability to absorb additional sudden drops in Middle Eastern crude production or export capacity.

Structural Supply Limitations Amplify Upstream Risks

From a macroeconomic perspective, Goldman Sachs warns that if the Middle East conflict persists and alternative transport routes cannot handle redirected trade, oil prices could reach 120. While weaker demand in major Asian markets and price-sensitive consumption may limit extreme movements, physical supply constraints remain the dominant structural factor. The report highlights that inventory reductions in the second quarter have diminished global buffers to levels that increase market sensitivity. Consequently, even minor disruptions to Gulf shipping or processing infrastructure could trigger rapid price increases, directly affecting refining margins, transportation costs, and chemical feedstock expenses across international industrial supply chains.

Looking forward, energy market participants continue to monitor daily tanker transit volumes through the Strait of Hormuz, export data from Gulf producers, and emergency policy responses from key consuming nations. Institutional investors and corporate commodity buyers are adjusting hedging strategies to account for the expanding range of possible price outcomes. While diplomatic talks on maritime security are ongoing behind closed doors, markets remain highly sensitive to physical trade flows. Until transit through the Persian Gulf stabilizes at pre-conflict levels, global crude benchmarks will likely carry a substantial geopolitical risk premium driven by maritime security uncertainties.
