Nearly 200 Wildfires Trigger Evacuations Across Northern Ontario

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO / RankWire.AI / – Northern Ontario encountered an expanding wildfire crisis Wednesday as almost 200 fires burned throughout the region. Ontario reported 183 active wildland fires at 3 p.m. on July 15, with the Northwest Fire Region accounting for 136 of those by evening. Crews had yet to contain 63 fires. Additionally, officials noted eight new fires during the day. Hot, dry, and windy conditions kept fire risk at extreme levels across multiple northern districts.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for Armstrong, Whitesand First Nation, Gull Bay First Nation, and Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation. The orders also affected Namaygoosisagagun First Nation and Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation. The Ontario Provincial Police supported evacuation efforts and managed road closures in the area. Officials advised residents near Ignace, Crystal Lake, and Highway 633 to prepare for potential departure. Emergency teams urged the public to keep evacuation routes clear and avoid unnecessary travel.

A wildfire swept through Namaygoosisagagun, a remote community approximately 200 kilometres north of Thunder Bay. Residents escaped by boat since the community is not accessible by road. The Anishinabek Nation confirmed that all known residents had reached safety, pending a comprehensive community assessment. The fire caused damage to or destruction of homes and other structures. Namaygoosisagagun has roughly 40 residents. Local leaders continued to inspect properties and assess damages following the evacuation.

Evacuations and Road Closures Disrupt Life in Northern Ontario

Highway 599 remains closed between Highway 516 and Mishkeegogamang First Nation. Highway 527 is also shut between Gull Bay First Nation and Armstrong. Conversely, Highway 11 has reopened between Highways 633 and 623, though emergency crews continue working nearby. Canadian National Railway halted operations near Armstrong after flames surrounded a train, with workers evacuating safely. Police cautioned drivers to expect changing conditions and to adhere to all closure notices.

Firefighting teams prioritized protecting communities, homes, and vital infrastructure across northwestern Ontario. Dryden 13, along with fires in the Wabakimi area, merged into the larger Thunder Bay 36 fire. Other critical zones included Quetico Provincial Park, Atikokan, Upsala, Cat Lake, and Fort Hope. Water bombers targeted active fire fronts while ground crews built containment lines. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources mobilized available personnel and equipment to areas at greatest risk.

Smoke Drift Reaches Southern Ontario and U.S. States

Smoke from the wildfires spread from northern Ontario into the southern parts of the province and into the northeastern United States. Toronto’s Air Quality Health Index hit 10+, the highest risk level, amid heavy smoke on Wednesday. Environment Canada issued warnings about very poor air quality and limited visibility. Health officials recommended that children, seniors, and individuals with heart or lung conditions restrict outdoor activities. Fine particles from the smoke can irritate airways and exacerbate existing health issues.

A Restricted Fire Zone was established in the Northwest Fire Region and parts of northeastern Ontario. The order prohibited open burning, including campfires, and suspended current burning permits. Ontario has recorded 453 wildland fires this year, compared to 349 at the same time in 2025. The ten-year average for this period is 312 fires. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources urged residents to follow evacuation directives and consult official updates on roads and wildfires before traveling.
