UN Endorses Equal Earth Map Projection to Address Mercator Distortions in World Cartography

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly passed an international resolution advocating for more precise and equitable portrayals of continental landmasses on global maps. The resolution, supported by 107 member states through a recorded vote, aimed to confront cartographic distortions that tend to downplay the size of Africa and other equatorial regions in the Global South. UN adopts resolution to correct world map representation as diplomatic delegations take formal action to resolve historical biases embedded within traditional cartographic standards.

United Nations General Assembly hall delegates convene during formal international voting sessions.

This international initiative targets specifically the widely used Mercator projection, which was created in the 16th century by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for navigation purposes. Although effective for maritime navigation, the mathematical scaling of the Mercator map progressively inflates land sizes as they move away from the equator, while compressing regions nearer to it. The United Nations General Assembly’s published documentation states that these technical inaccuracies persist in modern educational textbooks, news outlets, digital mapping tools, and official government publications across the globe.

During assembly discussions, international representatives recognized that cartographic distortions extend beyond technical inaccuracies into broader socioeconomic and cultural spheres. The assembly highlighted that visual misrepresentations influence public understanding of the economic, political, and cultural importance of entire continents. The UN has adopted a resolution promoting the use of equal-area alternatives such as the Equal Earth projection, introduced in 2018, which visually depicts landmasses in proportion to their actual size relative to each other.

UN Resolution Aims to Correct Distortions in World Map Representations

This decision follows an initiative led by a coalition of African nations, with backing from the African Union, which submitted the draft in August. Supporters stressed that traditional wall maps portraying landmasses like Greenland as equal in size to Africa foster significant geographical misconceptions, especially considering Africa is physically fourteen times larger. Reports from Emirates News Agency emphasized that correcting these historical visual biases is a vital step toward creating fair geographic education worldwide.

Under the framework of the approved resolution, specialized international agencies are instructed to coordinate technical mapping standards. The assembly urged the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the United Nations Development Programme to collaborate with academic and geospatial experts to establish updated cartographic guidelines. These efforts aim to assist member states and digital media developers in adopting equal-area projection standards across both public and private sectors.

UN Educational Bodies Tasked with Creating Precise Spatial Standards

While promoting voluntary adoption of equal-area mapping methods, the resolution remains non-binding and does not prohibit the use of the traditional Mercator projection nor legally require private technology firms to modify proprietary software. Instead, the document encourages member states to integrate core cartographic principles into primary and secondary education curricula. Ministries of education are urged to raise awareness among students, scientific communities, and publishers about the perceptual biases introduced by different map projections.

The implementation of the UN resolution will be monitored by international cartographic and geospatial policy groups as educational institutions review textbook standards. Upcoming international geospatial summits are expected to review updated digital mapping standards. Detailed records of assembly votes and technical projection specifications are accessible through UN registry portals.
