Indonesia Aims to Save US$10.8 Billion with B50 Biodiesel Initiative

JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel program is predicted to save approximately 170 trillion rupiah, or US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This forecast accounts for decreased expenditure on imported diesel due to the country’s shift to a 50% biodiesel blend. The regulation applies to diesel used in transportation, industry, shipping, rail systems, and electricity generation. The renewable component is derived from palm oil, while traditional diesel supplies the remaining half. The initiative replaces a portion of Indonesia’s fossil fuel consumption with domestically produced biofuel.

Indonesia targets US$10.8 billion savings with B50 biodiesel
B50 biodiesel expands palm-based fuel demand across Indonesia’s national energy market.

Indonesia commenced nationwide B50 usage on July 1 and officially launched the mandate on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. It superseded B40, which mandated a 40% biodiesel content since 2025. B50 consists of equal parts fatty acid methyl ester, known as FAME, and petroleum diesel. The increased requirement encourages more palm oil to be used within the local fuel market. Distributors are permitted to utilize remaining B40 stocks until September while completing the transition. Authorities rolled out updated fuel standards and distribution strategies ahead of the implementation.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry estimates foreign exchange savings from B40 at Rp133.3 trillion. Its projection for B50 raises this figure to Rp170 trillion for 2026. Officials also anticipate the mandate will reduce fossil diesel consumption by around 4 million kilolitres. Pertamina has been designated to oversee blending operations and ensure fuel delivery across the country. The company also manages storage and distribution logistics for regions involved in the program. The rollout includes technical specifications for production, transportation, and retail distribution.

B50 Policy Boosts Domestic Biodiesel Demand

Indonesia projects B50 to require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. This exceeds the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated for the B40 program in 2026. The mandate will also involve the consumption of an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These supplies are intended for use in road transportation, industrial machinery, shipping, railways, and power generation. The volume range is based on the expected national demand under the new blend across various fuel markets throughout Indonesia. Officials calculated these figures considering projected consumption levels with the B50 standard.

The government’s forecast indicates an added value for Indonesia’s palm oil sector of Rp23.49 trillion. It also estimates that around 2.1 million jobs across farming, processing, logistics, and fuel distribution will be supported by the program. Officials believe that B50 could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 44.46 million tonnes, compared to the B40 estimate of 39.66 million tonnes. These figures are part of the ministry’s comprehensive evaluation of the higher biodiesel blend, covering the entire program rather than specific regions or sectors.

Preliminary Testing Conducted Before B50 Implementation

Prior to the rollout, the government conducted extensive testing of B50 in various vehicles, including cars, trucks, mining equipment, agricultural machinery, trains, ships, and power plants. The trials for lighter vehicles covered 50,000 kilometers, while heavier vehicles underwent testing over 40,000 kilometers. Mining machinery was operated for approximately 1,000 hours without significant engine issues related to the fuel. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel complied with government standards and manufacturers’ technical specifications. These tests were completed before the nationwide distribution began in July.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel requirement since the introduction of B2.5 in 2008. It moved to B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025. The B50 initiative represents the latest mandatory increase in the national biodiesel blend. Each transition necessitated modifications to fuel standards, production capacity, storage infrastructure, and transportation systems. The 2026 program now features an equal mix of biodiesel and conventional diesel in the national fuel supply.
